It always gets me thinking whenever a vehicle passes me in a 20 zone despite travelling at approximately 19mph or more myself. Don't drivers understand that if a cyclist in front of them is going at or near the speed limit, they shouldn't be overtaking? And, if I'm rude enough to be travelling at 20mph in my car in a 20 zone, you can almost guarantee that the car behind will be inches off my bumper. There's something about not breaking the speed limit that frustrates certain drivers.

If the rider behind's front tire touches the rear tire of the rider in front, almost invariably the rider behind goes down (typically a broken collarbone). Rider in front feels only a nudge. Happened to me several times (as the rider in front) in races and in group training. Up to the rider behind to maintain space or drop off.

People driving are fully alert to their mobiles, but sadly not when or if they indicate.

This is a perfect case study of awful urbanism. There should be some actual infra to lower car speed at this intersection like speedbumps otherwise it's just a death trap.

Longer vehicle like vans take the turn from the right so they don't have to turn so sharply or slowly, which unfortunately puts a lot of cyclists in their blind spots, especially once they start to angle towards the turn. They need to rework that junction from scratch and not just paint new lines.

They have done all this near my home and even put a useless cyclops junction and guess what bike rider use the footpath

put an island there, give way line, or even a stop line with signs. Then people should then look.

A lot of drivers dont realise a cycle lane should be treated like a normal car lane, when they cross it to take a junction they dont imagine it like taking an exit from a duel carriage way from lane 2. They think because its small and at the side of the road it doesnt count. Plus the amount of drivers that dont respect cyclists as well means cyclists have to do more work to keep safe in situations like this and cant trust drivers. I feel the painted lines are a bit of an improvement but the council have balanced it out vs the amount of cyclists that use it and the cost to put the infrastructure in, to put an island in will be more expensive than the paint. Still the best option as a cyclist is look over your shoulder before committing to going through, treat everyone like an idiot, be ready to slow and stop if you feel your safety is at risk. It shouldnt be that way if everyone could drive correctly.

The problem is not the spacing, but the angle of the turn. You could probably take that left at 50 and be fine. If it were 90, drivers would be forced to slow down and be much more likely to give way. A steep hump and parallel crossing would further improve that.

many drivers just don't care. When I go running and I come to a round-a-bout where I want to cross the road, I am looking over my right shoulder to see if they are indicating left so I know whether I can carry on running or cross without stopping (any runner will know, you don't want to stop) but I'd say half the drivers don't indicate when they are taking the first left. I have stopped running on the pavement now and go in the woods because of drivers. Also, they love to park all 4 wheels on the pavement blocking it, they see pavements for parking.

The lorry driver hasn’t seen the new changes to the Highway Code, you should give way to cyclists horses and horse drawn vehicles going straight on before you turn.

Once a vehicle is moving, I do as what Gaz did in the video and hold back. I have seen people, mostly on hire bikes/e-bikes/ delivery riders just up the inside without a care in the world. I am still wary of drivers trying to left hook when they are behind reaching the junction!

You asked why not indicate while in stationary traffic? It’s obvious you’ve never driven a large vehicle. When you indicate in stationary traffic the morons in cars will try and overtake even though there’s oncoming vehicles or a red light ahead 😂

I think his late indication was because he was assessing the corner to see if there was anything blocking him, hence the late indication because he indicates once the Vans cleared. I would never pass a large vehicle there nearside as the visibility for the driver is extremely low.

A daily occurrence for anyone using the roads. For me, I hate being behind a bus. They don't put their indicators on until they are right at the bus stop! So I'm always cautious and try to stay a bit back and on the right of the lane so I can have time to pull out safely. The usual suspects/stereotypes are the what you'd think they are: buses, white vans, taxi's (black and Uber), German whips (BMW, Audi, Merc)....and Lime/Boris bikes.

First impressions count: please correct your title, it is not good English. And you shouldn't have even been THINKING about going up the inside of that lorry, so it doesn't matter when he started indicating.

Two thoughts: (a) this is a perfect example of how these cycling videos can be useful to alert cyclists of the hazards of certain situations and (b) that's a really bad location for lights on that truck, they tried to protect the lights but even so that lens was smashed, surprising the bulb survived.

Based on my daily encounters, I'd count that as an *early* indication. They not only indicated before starting the manoeuvre, but also at a point where other road users had time to see and react to the signal.

Although I agree the truck driver was a little late in indicating, at least he didn't wait until you were actually alongside the truck. But credit when it's due, at least you anticipated what the truck was potentially going to do and you held back accordingly which is something a lot of cyclists don't do.

Very poor from the driver, yet feel he would have been the first to complain if a cyclist had gone his left side before he started to indicate - shouldn't be going down his left I know but we all know people do. Well done Gaz on your awareness of what was likely to, and did indeed, happen.

If you drive a truck like that and do something like this your licence should be immediately and permanently revoked because this is how cyclists are murdered.

Hey, he started to indicate at least BEFORE he turned, not like the car at the end of the clip, that started to indicate WHILE changing the lane.
